The vintage has progressed fairly well owing to the fine weather of the latter part of the month and in some sections is practically over.

The yield is the greatest in five years. This is due part-, to the fine season and also to the fact that young vineyards are coming into bearing. As all the cooperage in Sonoma and Fresno counties was empty some time ago, and that in the height of the vintage large quantities of cooperage was rushed to the wineries, it is estimated that the yield of dry and sweet wines this year will be between thirty million and thirty-five million gallons. There has been no price set for new wines thus far but they ought to open out as good as last year. As yet none of the wines of this vintage have been offered and buyers seem reluctant about making offers.

'However, 'the demand exists and the value is in tlie.wineand is sure to come out. The situation naturally ought to he better than at the same time last year. The market for old wines remains unchanged, with prices firm. Exports of wine during the month by sea aggregated 275 cases and 582,170 gallons, valued at $204,264. Of this quantity 493,062 gallons went to New York and 37,326 to Hawaii.
